Should it be simple or ostentatious?

Simplicity is the key to this wonderful day. Think about why you are renewing your vows. Is it a turning point in your relationship and reaffirming your love for one another. It doesn’t have to be all glitz and glamour. It should come from the heart.

There were things that I wanted to include in my wedding ceremony but I couldn’t can I now?

There are no limitations when you are renewing your vows, you can have whatever you want? Depending on when the wedding was a lot of couples didn’t have the choices that we have these days. There may have been a song that you wanted to walk in to but your only choice was ‘Here comes the Bride.’ well now it’s your chance to have whatever song means the most to you. It maybe the song you first danced to at the disco when you first met

I’m scared of what to say in my renewal of vows? Where do I start?

It can be scary but once you start putting pen to paper you will find that things or moments will come to you which you would dearly love to include in vow renewal. This wonderful ceremony is about the love you have for each other and the jotting down of memorable times in your live is what makes you two so unique. You shared these times together, they mean a lot to you so yes, include them in your vow renewal, they will then be another memory to treasure. If you need any help then you could always ask a wedding celebrant to help you.

Do we have to wear our original wedding outfits?

It is totally up to you. Some people do because it reminds them of their day, some people don’t because of the fashion at the time. It really depends on the nature of your occasion. Is it casual or formal. You may not have wanted to wear wedding attire the first time around, so go with what you feel. The most important part is your wedding vows and reflecting on your continued love for each other.

We got married in a church the first time, do we have to do that again?

Not at all. This wedding vow ceremony can be held absolutely anywhere. There is no legal side to a wedding renewal and so holds no licensing restrictions. It is a ceremony that is reaffirming your love for one another. It’s all about you two.

I don’t like the thought of walking down an aisle. Do I have to?

That’s okay, you don’t need to do that. As you are already married, you could maybe walk in together or like one of my couples chose to do, they walked in from either side and met in the middle. It was pure joy.

What about bridesmaids and page boys? Should I have them?

For renewal of vows it would be an idea not to have any attendants, ie best man, matron of honour, bridesmaids etc. Instead, create a special role for some of the children if you want them to be involved. An order of service for the day would be a wonderful way to get them involved. Get the children to make them so that they are definitely individual. They can then give them out on the day.

Do we need to buy new rings for our renewal of vows ceremony?

This is personal to both of you. You can if you wish or have your original ones. For a wedding renewal that I officiated, the groom decided to buy his wife a beautiful ring that wasn’t a wedding ring and it was her choice if she wanted to wear it on her wedding finger or not. On this occasion, she wanted to and it was beautiful. The groom wrote some words indicating the relevance of the ring and what his wife meant to him. Beautiful, just beautiful.
